Golf Swings Over America

For the first time on my quest, I got rained out.  Thunderstorms combined with a lot of rain in Connecticut kept me off the courses today.  So I found myself sitting in my hotel room this morning, staring out the window at the crappy weather wondering how I would entertain myself.  Well I caught up on a bit of work in the morning, then decided to head up the road about 15 minutes to the local Casino. I was impressed by the size of the Foxwoods Casino, stuck in the middle of nowhere, the vast hotel and casino complex rises up above the treetops, dwarfing the natural setting around it.

I took the back roads route from my hotel, up through the little Village of Old Mystic and then quickly found myself on a very narrow and winding road, slowing down for the odd massive puddle cause by flash flooding of a few local streams and rivers.  As I kept driving and driving on this seemingly endless road, I pondered whether this was a sign from above that perhaps I should just forget the venture.  And then, just when I was convinced I had made a wrong turn somewhere, I was there.

Now I’m not a huge gambler.  In fact, some would say I don’t actually gamble.  I play the slots and if one is completely honest with ones self, you don’t often win at slots.  Foxwoods isn’t one Casino, it appears to be many smaller ones housed in one very large complex. Well after finding the smoke-free casino closed until Friday, I walked into the largest Casino area and promptly walked out about 30 seconds later.  When you are not used to smoke filled rooms, it is extremely overwhelming.  I figured my trip was going to be extremely short lived, but upon talking to one of the security guards I was informed there was another smoke-free casino a bit further down the complex.

En route to my new destination, I couldn’t help but chuckle to myself as I passed by the extremely long queue for the buffet.  My god, people are desperate for terrible food!

Anyway, long story short I reached my destination, scoured the area for a “prime” seat at the 25 cent machines and within 5 minutes I was up $20. So I cashed out of that machine and feeling somewhat cocky, headed over to my favourite “Wheel of Fortune” machines.  Ten minutes later, I was down $30. Enough of this crap I said to myself and I was gone.

Back to the hotel, I caught up on some work emails and then decided to work out. And when I was done that, I decided to go see a movie, which turned out to be pretty close to a private screening.  I texted Maria two minutes before the show was due to start as I was the only one in the theatre.  Turned out to be 8 people in total watched “Hercules” with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnston.  Pretty thin plot line just in case you’re wondering.

So that’s it.  The rain finally stopped around 4 pm and at 5:30 I noticed the sun through my window.  Tomorrow is slated to be sunny and 75.  Perfect golf weather.  But it forces me to play 36 holes tomorrow, which I was trying to avoid this trip.  Oh well…been there, done that!

I’ll let you know how that goes….
