Golf Swings Over America

After playing in sweltering 29 degrees (Celsius) temperature with about 200% humidity in Memphis on Wednesday afternoon, today’s temperature of  7 was just a bit of an adjustment.   I truly felt like I was back home.  Without a lie, at one point I could see my breath and I swear to god it was snowing.  Now it might have been the white blossoms coming off the Dogwoods, but I’m going with snow!

Add to that the fact that somewhere along the line the “southern hospitality” thing disappeared.  I got a little turned around on the way to the golf course (Boone Links) I was playing at this morning, but I stumbled upon another one run by the City of Florence.  No problem I thought, surely to god they will know where the course is that I’m trying to find.  Well when I asked the gentleman at the pro shop where Boone Links golf course was he kind of gave me a funny look, then proceeded to tell me to turn right out of the parking lot onto hwy. 18 and I’d have to go about 10 miles.

So let me paint this picture.  When I turned right out of the parking lot, I was in a very commercialized area of the city.  A mall nearby the golf course I was just leaving, lots of restaurants etc.   About two miles down the road, things started to get a little more spread out and there wasn’t nearly as much development.  About 4 miles down the road and I was passing horse farms (go figure, I was in Kentucky after all).  Eight miles down the road and I was in a land that time forgot.  You can start doing the tune from Deliverance any time now.  Now don’t get me wrong.  I love driving country roads, but this one had hairpin turns that would make professional race car drivers stand up and take notice.

Well, 12 miles out the road ended and I was faced with the decision to turn left or right onto two totally different roads.  No golf course in sight.  So I turned around and on my way back I came across a mailman (in his little vehicle).  He was a bit apprehensive when I first stopped beside his vehicle.  In fact, he pulled ahead about 20 yards (I guess he figured I was going to rob him).  Anyway, he wasn’t totally sure where the course was, but he knew it wasn’t where I currently was.

Long story short..the course ended up being less than 1 mile from the where I first stopped to ask directions.  So apparently the cold wasn’t just in the air.  It was also in the guy’s shoulder!!!
