“Best Bang for the Buck” – Golf Digest
#1 Public Golf Course in Kentucky – Golf Week
#8 Best Bargain Golf Course in U.S. – Maximum Golf
What a fitting way to end my current road trip, playing on an absolute gem of a course. Forget the fact that it was only 7 degrees (C) and the wind was whipping around like you wouldn’t believe. This course fits the billing.
For those of you who may end up playing here at some point in time I’ve got one major piece of advice. Keep your ball in the cut fairway. Picture a drive down the fairway that just rolls into the second cut. Now imagine driving your cart up to the spot where think your ball is and spending 5 minutes trying to locate it because the 2nd cut is so lush and thick that your ball is hidden. And when you do find it, don’t count on using the normal club you would select for the distance left to the green; that will get you about 1/2 way there!
It’s ironic in a way. I spent a full week in Hilton Head and then 3 days in the deep south before I headed up through Memphis, Sikeston Missouri and then across to Northern Kentucky and it seemed the further north I got, the better the conditions of the golf course. I would have guessed the exact opposite for this time of the year.
The other thing I loved about this course was the greens. Most of them were quite large, but lots of character. Two in particular that were extremely long and narrow. When I say long, I mean long. At least 30 yards. And all but one in excellent condition with zero winter kill.
So if in northern Kentucky, seek it out. At $42 for a round (with cart) it is a must play for sure.
